Choosing Safe Transportation

Exploring a new country is exhilarating, but ensuring your safety is paramount. In this video, we'll guide you through essential tips for selecting safe transportation during your journey.

 Research and Planning

Before you go, arm yourself with knowledge. Research transportation options online using trusted travel websites, forums, and apps. Understand local transportation customs and regulations to navigate smoothly.

 Always Share your Plan

Regardless of the mode of transportation you choose, you should always share your plan with a trusted individual. A trusted local contact is the best option, if they are available. Sharing your plan is simple. You can;

  • Screenshot, text, or email your itinerary.

  • Use a mobile tracking application that shares your live geocoordinates.

  • Or share a pin of your location periodically.

 Vehicle Rentals

Self-driving in a foreign country can be fun, but it can also expose the traveler to unnecessary risks, depending on how familiar they are with the driving culture. Many foreign locations have limited law enforcement capabilities, allow aggressive and impaired driving, and have strict licensing and insurance requirements. Before you decide to rent a vehicle;

  • Check the local requirements for drivers licensing and registration.

  • Inquire with the rental company about the legal insurance requirements.

  • Research the rules of the road, traffic signage and lights, and traffic enforcement.

  • Make sure you have a clear understanding of the traffic culture and hazardous conditions you might encounter.

 Public Transportation

Public transportation may be your most reliable choice. It really depends on current safety standards and if they are enforced. If you choose to use public transportation,

  • Check schedules and routes in advance to avoid confusion.

  • Plan your travels during off-peak hours to escape crowds and potential pick pockets and purse snatchers.

  • Purchase tickets from official sources to sidestep scams.

  • Share your itinerary with a trusted individual and check in with them upon departure and arrival.

 Ride-Sharing Services

Ride-sharing apps offer convenience, but tourists have been taken advantage of and victimized by individuals providing these services.

  • Always confirm the driver’s identity and vehicle license plate number before entering.

  • Ask the driver to provide their name. Do not give yours first.

  • Make use of in-app tracking features to share your ride's progress with a friend or family member.

  • Check your drivers rating and feedback. If you are using a new driver, it might be better to cancel and acquire a different driver, rather than take your chances.

 Taxi Safety

Taxis can be safe if you're aware and cautious. In some countries, illegal or unregulated taxi services are readily available, cheaper, and hard to identify. Again, make sure to do your research.

  • Choose well-known or official taxi companies only.

  • Hail taxis from official taxi stands if possible.

  • Ensure the meter is used or agree on a fare upfront.

  • Always sit in the back seat and keep your belongings close.

  • Do not divulge personal information or schedules.

 Walking and Biking

For shorter distances, consider walking or biking, with an understanding that over 50% of vehicle accidents abroad involve pedestrians.

  • Learn local traffic rules and pedestrian etiquette.

  • Stick to well-lit and populated routes, especially at night.

  • Take different routes and vary your schedule if you are in a location for a longer period of time.

Local Advice and Language

Locals are your best guides. Ask for recommendations on safe transportation with an understanding that safety standards vary based on what one is used to. Learning a few key phrases in the local language can help you communicate effectively and clearly understand recommendations.

Emergency Preparedness

Be prepared for the unexpected. In some foreign locations, emergency services may not be your best response capability, or even available.

  • Know local emergency numbers.

  • Know where the nearest vetted hospitals are located.

  • Keep your phone charged and carry a backup power bank.

  • Carry a physical map or download offline navigation apps.

  • If necessary, travel with an individual first aid kit.

To ensure a secure journey, remember these tips for selecting safe transportation. Prioritize your safety,  and embark on your adventure with confidence.
